In 1983 Sabeth Buchmann and Stephan Geene founded the performance/video group minimal club in Munich, which developed a specific type of theater and of video work with references to visual art and theory as in "es gibt keine lösungen weil es kein problem gibt sagt marcel duchamp zu recht" (there is no solution because there is no problem says marcel duchamp rightly)" (1983), "michel foucaults theatrum philosopicum" (1985) or "kallas + kennedy“, commissioned by Steirischer Herbst in 1991. Venues were off-spaces and unused buildings, but also galleries and art institutions (Kunstverein Munich 1989, Künstlerhaus Bethanien (with a stipend by Kunstfonds Bonn 1991). On the occasion of the performance of DIE ANTI NEW YORK PLÄNE, part 1: naturidentische stoffe minimal club organized an additional exhibition with Jutta Koether, Die Tödliche Doris, and Nina Hoffmann. The exhibition and performance were accompanied by the start of an annual newspaper A.N.Y.P., which was limited to 10 years. This newspaper became a tool to trigger collaborations, friendships, encounters and new political agendas (BüroBert, Katja Diefenbach, Juliane Rebentisch, Diedrich Diederichsen, Alice Creischer, Botschaft e.v., Freie Klasse, Judith Hopf, Marion von Osten and many others). Moving to Berlin in 1990 enabled a multitude of new artistic and political collaborations as by the participation in the exhibition "37 Räume" in Auguststrasse 1993 and the subsequent nomination as curator of Kunst-Werke (KW), where he curated the exhibition „trap“ together with BüroBert. Trap was part of a new politiciation of discoursive exhibitions. Followed by collaborations with Renate Lorenz at the Shedhalle Zurich, where specific exhibition formats were developed such as GameGrrrrl (an exhibition on gender and technology, also shown at the Kunstverein Munich), and Nature TM (a fair of artistic and political activities on biotechnology) and finally the publication "geld.beat.synthetk" (Edition ID-Archiv, 1987). Political/artistic congresses such as CopyShop (at Unfair in köln, Messe2o.k. (in Düsseldorf) and minus96 Berlin led to the Innenstadtaktionstagen, cooperations and actions together with political groups - in Berlin, but also in many other cities. b_books was formed in this context as a collective organization that runs a bookstore, a venue, a publishing house (publications by Toni Negri, Harun Farocki, Jacques Rancière, Susanne Leeb, Paul B. Preciado, Cookie Müller, Maurizio Lazzarato, Chris Kraus, Lauren Berlant et al.

Beyond constant video-assisted exhibitions and lectures, Stephan Geene works as a filmmaker since 2005 with films that were produced by bbooksz av. AFTER EFFECT (UA Int. Filmfestival Oldenburg 2008) poses a kind of "biopolitical question" in Berlin's creative milieu: how does aliveness feel when it becomes an object. Sabine Timoteo plays the main role, Aljoscha Weskott her counterpart together with Laura Tonke, Lars Eidinger, Claudia Basrawi a.o.
umsonst (UA Berlinale 2014 Forum Expanded) is a feature film, but also a documentation of the change of contemporary Kreuzberg/Neukölln, its reality and its myths. Both films have been released as DVD by Filmgalerie451.
The actually last film is SHAYNE (UA Berlinale Forum expanded 2019), depicting the Schlagerstar Ricky Shayne, his background in Cairo and Lebanon and his spectatular failure in Westgermanys artistic TV-Milieu in the early 1970ies. Starring Ricky Shayne himself, his sons and artists as Kerstin Cmelka, Justus Köhncke, Claudia Basrawi, filmed once more by Volker Sattel, Merle Vorwälder responsible for stage design and costumes .
